NUMBER 1: The Monday Night Miracle

Game: Chiefs vs Broncos, Week 7

Date: October 17th, 1994

It was the 2nd season for Joe Montana in Kansas City and he was at the twilight of his career. There was a sense that this would be his last season and in the end, that ended up being the case.

Deep in the back of  John Elway‘s mind, he could remember when Montana and the 49’ers  blew him out in Super Bowl XXIV. That night in the 55-10 rout, Montana threw five touchdown passes whereas Elway was picked off twice.

Both prove to be up for the challenge for their final showdown on Monday Night Football.

The game went back-and-forth most of the night with neither team wanting to gain the full advantage. It was tied 7-7 after one quarter, 14-14 at halftime and 21-21 as they entered the fourth quarter. Neither quarterback blinked.

The game remained tied until Chiefs kicker, Lin Elliott kicked a 19-yard field goal with 4:08 to go to give them a 24-21 lead. But, knowing Elway, that lead wasn’t safe. At this point, Elway had put together six Broncos comebacks against the Chiefs already in his career, and had the Broncos in line for another one until Shannon Sharpe fumbled on the Chiefs’ 40 with just 2:45 to go.

However, Marcus Allen gave them the ball right back the very next play on a fumble of his own!

On a classic, aggravating John Elway drive, he led the Broncos 39 yards on six plays, finishing it off himself with a 4-yard touchdown run to give them a 28-24 lead with just 1:29 left. Great! Here we go again.

But that was more than enough time for the legendary Joe Montana.

After several underneath throws that moved the ball down the field, Montana connected with Willie Davis on a five yard reception.  Davis extended his arms at the goal line before reaching the pylon for a touchdown and the Chiefs took the lead with 8 seconds left on the clock.

The monkey was off the Chiefs back as they finally spoiled an Elway comeback and finally got a win in Denver, something that hadn’t been done there in a long time.

This game is on this list for so many reasons but the fact that it was Montana vs. Elway makes it number one on my list.
