NUMBER 2: It Only Takes One Play
Game: Chiefs vs Raiders, Week 2
Date: September 8th, 1997
The Kansas City Chiefs were primed to have a huge season in 1997. The Defense was VERY strong and the team had just added free agent wide receiver, Andre “Spiderman” Rison. In other words, it was Super Bowl or bust.
Chiefs fans were very skeptical of Elvis Grbac (with good reason) and they were staring down the barrel of an 0-2 start in what was supposed to be the strongest team in recent memory.
So on the road, Monday Night Football, against the HATED Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs found themselves down by one point with about a minute left in the game. From their own 20, Grbac connected with Lake Dawson for a 21-yard gain, then a 20-yard gain to Brett Perriman. Suddenly, the Chiefs were in business.
With three seconds left on the clock, and the Chiefs needing to go 32 yards for the score, Andre Rison, who was only starting in his second game ever as a Chief, burned the Oakland secondary.
Grbac connected with Rison on the go-ahead touchdown and the Chiefs defeated the Raiders on national television on the final play of the game!
So not only did the Chiefs avoid an 0-2 start, they defeated their most hated rival on the FINAL play.
Those reason’s alone puts this game at number 2 on my list.
