Number 1 Best Running Back in Chiefs History: Priest Holmes

Stats With The Chiefs:

  • 65 Games Played
  • 1,321 Attempts
  • 7,798 Yards From Scrimmage
  • 83 Total Touchdowns

You can just see it in your head, over-and-over again. First-and-goal from the 1 yard line. Chiefs come out in a goaline set, Priest Holmes takes the hand-off up the middle and dives over the pile for an easy six points.

That play alone helped account for many of Priest’s team high, 83 touchdowns during his 6 year stint with the Chiefs. His most memorable season was in 2003, where he broke the single season rushing touchdown record (27) and earned the NFL’s Offensive Player Of The Year award. He is the only Chiefs player to have ever earned that honor.

Holmes was no one trick pony either. He was one of the best receiving backs of all time and was also a solid pass protector. He was truly the complete package.

His career was cut short by a severe neck injury he sustained in the 2005 season. Though he did make an attempt at a comeback, he ultimately decided to hang em’ up in 2007.

His number 31 should be retired in my opinion because no one will ever wear it like he did. As it stands now, Priest Holmes is the greatest back in Chiefs history and makes this list at number 1.
