Kansas City Chiefs Player Profile: Vance Walker

The 2014 regular season is just around the corner and Kansas City Chiefs fans are pretty excited to see their team take the field come September. During the offseason, the Chiefs added several free agents, one of whom is defensive tackle Vance Walker. Walker is the focus of today’s player profile.

Vance Walker attended Georgia Tech and was a member of the Yellow Jackets’ football team for four seasons. Walker had a total of 110 tackles (26.5 for losses), 13 sacks, four forced fumbles, and one defended pass (Source: Sports Reference). He was drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 draft by the Atlanta Falcons.

Most seventh rounders don’t make an immediate impact in the NFL, but Walker did all right for himself in year one. He played in 10 games and even started a game. He ended his rookie season with eight tackles and two defended passes.

The following year, Walker played in every game and started one. He had 11 tackles and one defended pass. It wasn’t until Walker’s third year in the pros that he recorded his first sack. He ended 2011 with two sacks, and also had his first forced fumble (and first fumble recovery).

After four seasons with the Falcons, Walker moved on to the Oakland Raiders. He played there for a year and did pretty well with 29 tackles and three sacks, but now Walker is apart of Chiefs Kingdom.

Walker signed a three-year contract with the Chiefs in March and more than likely will fill the gap that Tyson Jackson left when he left for Atlanta in free agency. Walker isn’t a huge name in the NFL, but he’s proven to be a talented defensive tackle and hopefully can make an impact for Kansas City’s defense.
