Sporting Kansas City hope to improve on their 2-2 draw against Toronto and beat the New York Red Bulls Tuesday in a nationally televised game.

Sporting currently sit tied with D.C. United for second in the Eastern Conference standings with 18 points in 12 games played. The New England Revolution are currently atop the table with 23 points in 12 games played.

New York are currently in the middle of the Eastern Conference with 14 points in 13 games played.

New York’s Bradley Wright-Phillips is currently tied with Sporting’s Dom Dwyer for the Golden Boot (most goals scored) in MLS with 10 goals each.

April 17th, 2013 at New York

Sporting and New York met twice last season with the first match up coming on April 17th at New York. In a closely contested game Sporting was able to jump out to an early lead when Graham Zusi sent a corner towards the near post and Aurelien Collin got his head to it and blasted it into goal to give Sporting the 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

Despite New York having 14 and Sporting having 13 shots, neither team was able to score after the 13th minute and Sporting stole a road win in New York with a final score of 1-0.

August 3rd, 2013 at Kansas City

The final match up of the season came on August 3rd in Kansas City. New York was able to open the scoring when Jonny Steele received a ball running up the left flank and dribbled in behind the defense before blasting a ball past Jimmy Nielsen to put New York ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute.

Sporting was able to tie the game just before half when Kei Kamara was able to tap in a rebound off the goalkeeper from a Claudio Bieler header to tie the game at 1-1 in the 45th minute.

New York was able to pull ahead after half time when Fabian Espindola was able to get in behind the defense on the right flank and was able to dribble it towards goal and send it into the side netting in the far post to give New York the 2-1 lead in the 63rd minute.

New York added an insurance goal not long after when a long throw by New York keeper Robles sent Jonny Steele on the counter up the left side and Steele passed it to Lloyd Sam in the middle of goal and Sam beat one defender and sent the ball past Jimmy Nielsen and New York looked to be on their way to victory with a score of 3-1 in the 69th minute.

Sporting was able to pull one back when Kei Kamara chipped a ball towards goal and Dom Dwyer headed it past Robles to draw things closer at 3-2 in the 92nd minute.

Sporting would not be able to get the equalizer as New York went on to win 3-2 in the final game between Sporting and New York. Sporting had every chance to win as they took 27 shots in the game but were only able to score 2 goals. New York only took 5 shots but made them count. All 5 of New York’s shots were on target and 3 of them were goals.

Noteworthy

Aurelien Collin could return from his hamstring injury Tuesday against New York. Collin shared on twitter that he was hopeful to return Tuesday.

Erik Palmer-Brown is eligible to play again after serving a one game suspension for his red card against Chicago.
