DEFENSIVE LINE
- Defensive End- Art Still, Neil Smith
- Defensive Tackle- Buck Buchanan, Dontari Poe
Kansas City has had a string of bad luck when it comes to drafting defensive lineman over the last 10 years. Players like Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, and Ryan Sims were all disappointments but that doesn’t mean they haven’t had their share of the great ones.
Art Still was selected to four Pro Bowls in just ten seasons in Kansas City. His 14.5 sacks in 1984 is still near the top of the list for single season sacks by a defensive end in Chiefs history.
Neil Smith was selected to five Pro Bowls and also collected 85.5 sacks in just nine seasons in Kansas City. That’s an average of 9+ sacks per season. Smith also had a nose for the ball at his defensive end spot, as he collected 28 forced fumbles for while in Kansas City.
Big Buck was a beastly defensive tackle at 6’7″, and he was extremely difficult for opposing offensive lineman to block as opponents often used double teams to try and stop him each game.
Unfortunately, their tactics did not work very well as Buchanan was often able to rush right through them to the tune of eight Pro Bowl selections and a spot in the NFL Hall of Fame in 1990.
Poe is still growing into a player but his future is bright enough for me to add him to this list. His combination of size, speed, and power, give him all the tools he needs to become a great player.
