DE-Jerry Mays, 5th Round (38th overall), SMU–Jerry Mays is one of the least-remembered great players in franchise history. He played 10 seasons, all with the Chiefs franchise, and made 7 pro-bowls, 2 1st team All-pro teams, and was named to the 1st team of the All-Time AFL team as a defensive end.
Other players considered: WR Joe Horn 1995, CB Brandon Carr 2008, and DT Tom Keating 1975.
Jerry Mays is one of the least-remembered great players in franchise history.
Mays played for both the Dallas Texans and after the team moved to Kansas City. He initially played defensive tackle for the Texans–after trying out as an offensive lineman, but moved to defensive end later in his career. He earned pro-bowl berths at both positions.
He once returned a fumble 58 yards for a touchdown against the Jets in a game, and was a team captain for both Super Bowl I and Super Bowl IV.
Jerry Mays was inducted into the Chiefs Hall-of-Fame in 1972 and passed away in 1994 from melanoma.
