S-George Saimes, 6th Round 1963 (48th overall), Michigan State — was named All-Time AFL 1st-team safety. Saimes never played a down in Kansas City. Instead, he moved on to Buffalo where he played in 5 pro-bowls and made 3 1st-team All-pro teams. Perhaps the reason Saimes could not stick with the Chiefs was the presence of fellow All-Time AFL 1st-team safety Johnny Robinson and 1962 All-AFL first team safety Bobby Hunt.
Other players considered: G John Wilber 1965, CB Kerry Reardon 1971, DT Derrick Ransom 1998, and OT Will Svitek 2005.
Saimes was a college teammate of another all-time Chiefs great taken in the same year in Ed Budde. After moving onto Buffalo, he started for 8 seasons and played in 121 games before retiring in 1972.
Former Pro Football writer and president of the Pro Football Writers Association, Larry Felser, calls Saimes:
"the finest open-field tackler in the league."
Saimes went on to be a professional football scout with the Blesto V Combine, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Washington Redskins, and the Houston Texans. Saimes died in Canton of leukemia on March 8, 2013. He was both born, and died, in Canton, Ohio–the home of the NFL Hall-of-Fame.
