Former NFL coach and current NBC analyst Tony Dungy criticizes Rex Ryan’s foul language on the Conroy/AP Former NFL coach and current NBC analyst Tony Dungy …

Number 4: Tony Dungy

Tony Dungy started his career in coaching with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1981, almost immediately after his playing career was over. In 1989, he left the Steelers to join the Kansas City Chiefs as defensive backs coach. He was a part of Marty’s first staff and remained there till 1992. Dungy contributed to developing one of the more dominant defense’s in the NFL at the time.

Dungy was offered his first head coaching gig with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he and defensive coordinator, Montey Kiffin, would come together to develop what’s now known as the Tampa 2, a commonly used term for an exotic zone defense. Dungy remained with the Buccaneers until the 2001 season, when he was fired after the Bucs were coming off a winning season. Tampa went on to win the Super Bowl the very next season.

Dungy moved on to Indianapolis where he really made a name for himself. He inherited one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Peyton Manning, and the two combined put together a dominating run through the early and mid 2000’s. Tony Dungy became the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl when he did so in 2006.

Dungy retired in 2009 and is now an analyst for Football Night In America on NBC. Dungy makes my list at number 4.
