Four Players The Kansas City Chiefs Could Live Without

KENDRICK LEWIS, SAFETY, 27

2013 SALARY: $1,374,725

This should be the easy decision. Kendrick Lewis just hasn’t lived up to his early promise and is completely replaceable. He did not play all that well in 2013, and surely there are better options out there for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs could target a safety in the draft, or maybe re-sign Husain Abdullah. There is a chance that Abdullah, who made $555,000 last season, would still be cheaper than Lewis was. Abdullah seemed to improve as the season went along after not playing in 2012. He could be a viable option.

Kansas City could also move Sanders Commings to safety. He did not play enough in 2013 to get much of a read on his skills because he was injured so often. A move to safety might be a good career choice for Commings.

One last option already on the roster just might be Marcus Cooper. He was exposed at times at corner this past season but he has the size and the skill set to be a serviceable safety. He might actually be someone who can guard the big tight ends in the division, as well. Food for thought.

Regardless, Lewis’ days with the Chiefs should be over. Even if he took a pay cut, his performances on the field weren’t really good enough to have him on this roster next season.
