Ryan Succop’s missed 41-yard field goal attempt in the waning seconds cost the Chiefs the game. All of the controversy that has arisen out in the game would have never come to light if he had just connected on that rather routine kick and ended the game right there. The snap was good; the hold was good; he just missed it. It happens.

It was a routine day for Dustin Colquitt, as he averaged 45.8 yards on 5 kicks. He did not pin the Chargers back inside the 20 at all, and he kicked one into the end zone that he often drops inside the five.

The Chiefs averaged 31.3 yards on 4 kickoff returns, and the one time Pro Bowler Dexter McCluster had the opportunity to run back a punt, he did so for 32 yards. The Chiefs did a good job holding the Chargers’ return game in check as well, allowing just 23.3 yards a return on three kickoff return attempts, and just 7 total yards on 2 punt returns.

The Kansas City special teams played at their usual high level but the missed field goal it what it boiled down to.
