SEPTEMBER
The Royals started September still 3 games over .500. After winning the first three games of the month, they were 72-66 on September 3rd. Despite going 14-12 from that point on, the Tigers and Indians continued to play good ball as well, and the Royals were eliminated from playoff contention with 4 games remaining in the season.
September was as exciting a stretch run for the Royals since the 1980’s. Kansas City had 15 straight games in the middle of the month against the Tigers and Indians, plus the Texas Rangers, who were in the think of the wild card battle as well. The Royals acquitted themselves well in this stretch, going 9-6, buy they needed to win a few more of the games with Detroit and Cleveland to gain ground.
The Royals finished the month going 17-10, their best month of the season, but they fell just short of their playoff run.
Over the past month of the season, for the first time in recent memory, Kansas City fans watched the score aboard as the Royals and five other teams battled it out for the 2 two wild card spots. Emotions soared and plummeted on a daily basis as the Royals crept up the standings with every win, and fell a little with every loss.
It was fun to care about baseball in September again. Though the Royals just fell short, it was a lot of fun.
