MAY

The Royals closed out April with a win and reeled off three more to start off the month of May. On May 5th, Kansas City was sitting pretty at the 17-10, and the world looked rosy.

Then the wheels came flying off.

From May 6th through the end of the month, the Royals only won 5 more games, and they lost 20. They scored 3 or fewer runs 16 times in that stretch of 25 games. The pitching staff only allowed more than 6 runs three times during that stretch. The pitching was keeping the Royals in games, but the offense could not muster any punch.

Greg Holland saved the first game and the next to last game of May but had none in between.

Kansas City only hit 14 home runs in 28 May games, and as a team, the Royals OPS was a minuscule .658. Something had to change.

On May 30th, George Brett took over as co-batting coach, along with Pedro Grifol. The Royals pulled off the win that day, but closed out the month with another loss.
