Top Five Sporting KC Goals Of 2013
With the 2013 MLS regular season finished, we wanted to look back on what we think are the top five goals scored by Sporting KC during the 2013 season.
Honorable Mention: Soony Saad’s strike from distance against Toronto F.C., July 13th, 2013
It is really hard to choose only five goals from an entire season, so we decided to throw out the honorable mention award to Soony Saad’s low driving shot against Toronto. It is just a classic, hard hit shot that the keeper doesn’t have a chance to get to.
#5: Claudio Bieler’s winning goal against D.C. United, April 5th, 2013
There are a few reasons this goal comes in at number five. The first is the brilliant play by Soony Saad. He intercepts a pass, and nutmegs the D.C. United defender. His perfect cross Bieler, who hits it first time into the back of the net. Another reason why this is one of our favorite goals of this season? The way the crowd absolutely erupts always gives us chills. It is a goal that you can watch over and over and not get tired of.
#4: Graham Zusi stays on his feet and chips the Montreal goalkeeper, March 30th, 2013
There are two aspects of this goal that put it at number four on the list. The first is the brilliant play from Benny Feilhaber. Not only does he bring the ball down acrobatically, but he plays a perfect pass to Graham Zusi. The second part is Zusi’s tenacity to stay on his feet and finish the play. A lot of players in his position would have gone to the ground to win a penalty, but Zusi stays on his feet, and is able to finish with a nice little chip over the Montreal goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
#3: Graham Zusi’s shross against Chicago, July 7th, 2013
Intentional or not, I am just happy that I get to use the noun shross to describe it. A shross is a combination of a cross and a shot, which is what this goal is. Zusi stated after the game that it was meant to be a cross to the back post, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an awesome goal to watch. The amount the ball curls is insane. I am just going to pretend that it was intentional.
#2: Claudio Bieler scores off of a great passing sequence, July 13th, 2013
While the finish of this goal wasn’t the most impressive, what is impressive is the build up that leads to the goal. Three first time touches and the ball is in the back of the net. Some of the best looking goals are the ones that tear apart a defense. This is one of those.
#1: Benny Feilhaber outside the boot strike against Colorado, August 31st, 2013
The amount of skill that it takes to pull this off is incredible. The ball is bouncing, Feilhaber is about 30 yards from goal, and he hits it with the outside of his foot. The ball is hit perfectly, and the Colorado goalkeeper has no chance. Not only is this Sporting KC’s best goal of 2013, but it should be a contender for goal of the year in all of MLS.
