7. David Murphy
Murphy is coming off an inexplicably terrible season. He hit only .220/.282/.374. The year before, he hit put up All-Star numbers (.304/.380/.479). His free-agency value has plummeted and the Royals can probably get him for less than $5 million per year. He’s another low-cost option if the Royals dedicate resources to other areas. He’ll probably be better, but no one knows by how much.
It’s risky, but Murphy would be more useful to the Royals than other teams because he is an excellent platoon compliment to Justin Maxwell. Murphy has a career line of .280/.347/.469 against righties, but has a .657 OPS against lefties. Maxwell can pick up the slack against lefties with his .789 OPS.
