Vanderbilt has to be the disappointment of the year in the SEC, right?
Given the progress they had made over the last two season, returning an experienced senior quarterback, and James Franklin staying on as head coach, there were plenty of reasons to think the Commodores would makes some noise in the SEC this season. That has not happened so far.
Part of the problem is teams like Missouri and Ole Miss got better, and South Carolina may be the best team in the SEC East now that Georgia and Missouri are dealing with injuries. One can make a pretty solid argument Vanderbilt didn’t get worse, they just didn’t get better over the offseason while everyone else did. Why Vandy didn’t get better is an issues Franklin is going to have to evaluate, because the answer may be that this is as good as it gets in Nashville.
