Welcome the return of Turner Gill’s Kansas Jayhawks. Or at least that’s how Saturday afternoon felt.
After a fake punt that make absolutely no sense, Kansas self-destructed and quit on the game. The result was a blow out loss to a team Kansas could have beaten on Saturday. This is probably why Weis said on Monday that there will be a lot of changes to next week’s depth chart.
KU actually held a 10-0 lead after the first quarter due to the excellent play of their defense and an efficient Jake Heaps. Heaps was seven for his first eight with 103 yards and a touchdown, and the offense looked the best it has ever looked under Weis.
Then the final three quarters happened.
Heaps finished the game 9-for-24 for 86 yards and an interception, Tony Pierson suffered a concussion, the defense quit – allowing 54 unanswered points, James Sims saw all of six carries, and the Michael Cummings experiment happened. It was a nightmare of epic proportions for the Jayhawks that began and ended with horrifying coaching.
Explain to me how last season’s leading Big 12 rusher has had only 64 carries in four games? After being one of the best rushing teams in the conference a season ago, Kansas now ranks 90th in the nation in rushing yards per game. Yes, Kansas lost nearly their entire offensive line from a year ago, but Kansas was also 1-11 – replacing that talent with equal talent shouldn’t be that difficult for a guy who prides himself on recruiting.
KU football is an absolute mess, and Weis is running out of time and excuses.
