10. Iowa State Cyclones
Record: 1-2
Previous Ranking: 10 (Trend: — )
Last Week: ISU 38, Tulsa 21
This Week: vs Texas (Thursday)
Next Week: at Texas Tech
Things were a bit uneasy when the Cyclones went into halftime tied at 14, but Iowa State was able to rebound and use a big second half to pull away from Tulsa. And they did it on the road, no less.
Aaron Wimberly rushed for 137 yards and averaged 7.2 yards per carry in the win. All of his work ended up payoff for Jeff Woody who pounded in three touchdowns from inside the three. He finished with only 12 yards on six carries.
Iowa State get’s to host their second-straight Thursday night game as their reward. Texas has all kinds of off-field issues going on in their athletic department, and injures are starting to mount up. Quarterback David Ash is likely out for Thursday’s game, which means the unpredictable Case McCoy will start.
Good news for the Cyclones is that they have the burden of the first win off of their back and they’ve figured out a way to establish the running game. The ability to play loose, at home, and to a strength that takes advantage of Texas’ weakness should give Iowa State a fighting chance. But ISU is going to need that rushing game to show up if they want to have any shot at the upset.
