Two Mock Drafts Predict Chiefs To Trade Up For QB Ryan Tannehill

We’re 16 days away from the 2012 NFL Draft and the mock drafts keep pouring in. Peter Schrager of FoxSports.com released a two round mock draft yesterday, and he has the Kansas City Chiefs trading from #11, all the way up to #3 with the Minnesota Vikings and taking Texas A&M QB. Ryan Tannehill. Using the trade value chart, Schrager says the trade would cost the Chiefs their 1st round draft pick (#11), 3rd round draft pick (#66) and 4th round draft pick (#98) in the 2012 Draft.

Schrager acknowledges that Chiefs current starting QB. Matt Cassel is simply a “middle of the road” type QB and is not good enough to get Kansas City to the Super Bowl and that the Chiefs’ staff and ownership are not sold on him either. He mentions that he really believes Tannehill could develop into a franchise QB and that he has unlimited potential.

Schrager has the Chiefs picking up Arizona St. CB Omar Bolden in the 2nd round. This seems like kind of a reach from what I’ve been seeing on the 5’10 202lb Bolden, as he missed the entire 2011 season, but hey, he’s a team captain, and we all know Pioli loves that. I am definitely not opposed to taking a CB in the draft after losing Brandon Carr in free agency to the Dallas Cowboys, but there are other positions I’d rather see the Chiefs go after, especially in the earlier rounds.

Another mock draft, this one from CBSSports.com’s Will Brinson, has KC trading up to #6 with the St.Louis Rams, who of course traded down from the #2 spot in the draft with the Washington Redskins last month. Brinson has the Chiefs selecting Tannehill and the trade only costing KC their 2012 1st (#11) and 2nd round pick (#44).

So that’s two mock drafts that have the Chiefs trading up for the 3rd best QB prospect in the draft and Justin Pawlowski of commishonline.com is reporting that the Chiefs are interested in trading up for him as well. It seems like Tannehill to the Chiefs is picking up steam in the media. What say you Chiefs fans? Should Pioli pull the trigger if an opportunity is there and would he even consider it?

The QB position is obviously the Chiefs’ biggest issue right now. This team has young talent all over and the only real position of need other than QB is nose tackle. But is Tannehill worth trading up for? Is he worth trading the 66th and 98th overall draft picks to move up and select him? What about the 44th overall pick?

For a potential franchise QB, I’d generally say yes. But there just seems to be a ton of question marks about a kid that only has 11 games of experience as a QB in college. If Tannehill drops to 11th where the Chiefs currently pick, I would probably take him and hope he develops into what this franchise desperately needs. I’m just not sure about trading up for him and I’m not convinced that Pioli will want to do that either knowing his track record.
