Evaluators will be grading defensive backs today in Indianapolis, and the Chiefs need to improve the secondary depth at both cornerback and the safety positions. There were obvious problems for the Chiefs’ defensive backfield, and hopefully some candidates will emerge for the Chiefs today.

Maybe John Dorsey can find a key component for the future today.

The Kansas City Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey is hard at work this weekend, trying to improve on the team’s 11-5 record, and shore up the holes that revealed themselves in the second half of the season.

The Chiefs have a number of options this year, as they could go with a wide receiver, a defensive back, a defensive tackle, a linebacker, or an offensive lineman with their 23rd overall pick. They might even be able to pick up a,n extra later pick by trading down, if the situation presents itself.

After finishing 2-14 in 2013, the Chiefs selected offensive tackle Eric Fisher with the number one overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. The Chiefs need him to improve on his numbers next season to make up for the probable loss of Branden Albert. The Chiefs obviously liked what they saw in Fisher a year ago at the combines.

The Chiefs bounced back from their dismal 2012 campaign to win their first 9 games of the season in 2013, but went 2-6 the remainder of the way, including a heart breaking 45-44 playoff loss in Indianapolis, as Kansas City blew at 28-point second half lead.

Now Dorsey must figure out how to increase the win total while maintaining the improvements made over the season, and finding ways to make the roster even better. He also has to deal with some salary cap challenges, even if they do let free agents Albert and Tyson Jackson go.

On Friday, he spoke at the combine, and Josh gave us the highlights on Saturday morning. He talked a little about last year’s number one pick, Fisher, and A.J. Jenkins, acquired from the San Francisco 49ers for Chiefs’ bust, Jonathan Baldwin.

Kansas City’s roster is filled with talent they have drafted over the years. Leigh came up with a great list for KC Kingdom’s Chiefs’ fans, of recent Chiefs’ picks, and some of the contributions they have made.  (Part One, and Part Two).
