Rashee Rice's legal situation became more complicated Tuesday, as the 2023 second-round pick is under investigation for allegedly hitting a photographer at a Dallas club early Monday morning. No charges have been filed and he was not arrested, though it's a concerning development for the Chiefs nonetheless.
The number of free-agent wide receivers available is dwindling and while there are a few intriguing options left, Kansas City may be forced to make a trade if they want to acquire a receiver as insurance.
If the organization wants to maximize its chances to win a third consecutive Super Bowl, which no team has ever done, Brett Veach needs to strongly consider acquiring one of these players:
4 WRs the Chiefs Should Trade For
1. Jahan Dotson - Washington Commanders
I don't know if the Commanders would be interested in trading the former No. 16 overall pick given they just drafted Jayden Daniels, but I'd at least make a call to find out. He only had nine total targets over the last four weeks of the season, notching only 518 receiving yards on the season. That makes me think Washington would at least answer the phone.
However, I love the pedigree and potential fit for Jahan Dotson on the Chiefs. He's an impressive route-runner and an excellent red-zone threat, catching seven TDs in just 12 games in his rookie season. After posting an 1,182-yard season his final year at Penn State, I'm willing to chalk his struggles last year up to the Commanders' dysfunction.

Even if Rice doesn't receive a large suspension and avoids future trouble, I'd be interested in adding Dotson anyway. Perhaps his cost will be too high, given the Chiefs' depreciating leverage, but he'd give Patrick Mahomes another dynamic high draft pick as the offense continues to evolve.
Dotson is good in the screen game and over the middle, making him a logical fit for Andy Reid's offense.
He caught only 49 of 83 targets, but Dotson still managed to keep his drop rate at only six percent. I blame the poor environment for his 2023 struggles, and few environments present the upside that Kansas City's does.
2. Treylon Burks - Tennessee Titans
Treylon Burks may be available from the Titans, given they've now got DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, and Tyler Boyd. He'd probably cost less than Dotson, but was also a first-round pick just two years ago.
Burks has only 49 catches for 665 yards in his career, though just like Dotson, I blame that lack of production on factors outside of his control. Not only have the QB situation and overall offensive situation been a mess in Tennessee, injuries have also limited Burks to just 11 games in each of his first two seasons.
The Chiefs don't have many options if there wind up being additional criminal charges filed against Rice, and Burks would be a great low-cost, high-upside acquisition. With 1,104 receiving yards and 11 TDs in his final year of college, Burks is a physical, big receiver capable of making contested catches.

That's a guy that can hold onto the football. Sometimes things don't work out at your first destination for a variety of reasons. It's hard to see how Burks earns a lot of targets from the Titans moving forward, so a move to the Chiefs may help him rebuild his value before his rookie contract ends.
If Tennessee considers trading Burks for a late-round pick, I'd make that deal. He provides the kind of receiver that Kansas City's roster lacks and could prove worth his pedigree.
3. Darius Slayton - New York Giants
Maybe the Chiefs just want to triple-down on speed. Darius Slayton ran a 4.39 40-yard dash and the New York Giants are going nowhere fast, so I think they'd be open to the idea of trading him. He was New York's leading receiver last year, but they just drafted Malik Nabors after drafting Jalin Hyatt in the third and Wandale Robinson in the second.
The Giants have spent three high-value draft picks at the position in the last few years, meaning Slayton could soon find himself on the way out.
His contract expires after this season and New York may choose to build around the receivers they recently acquired. In that situation, maybe Slayton be had for a draft pick, which the Giants desperately need.

Make no mistake, he's a productive player. Despite playing for the Giants all five years of his career, Slayton has four seasons with at least 724 yards while averaging 15.1 yards per catch with 19 career TDs.
He posted an excellent 3.8% drop rate in 2023 and could help stretch defenses while giving Patrick Mahomes three bonafide deep threats. Why not recreate the Legion of Zoom with Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, and Slayton? It's at least worth thinking about, right?
4. John Metchie III - Houston Texans
The Houston Texans made a massive upgrade to their wide receiver room this offseason by acquiring Bills star Stefon Diggs. John Metchie III doesn't have a real path to relevance in the offseason with incumbents Nico Collins and Tank Dell gobbling up targets too.
He was a second-round pick in 2022 who defeated leukemia and I still believe in the former Alabama star. Metchie had three catches for 44 yards in the Texans' playoff win against the Browns and caught 96 passes for 1,142 yards and eight TDs in his last season with the Crimson Tide.
The Texans sent a fair amount of capital to acquire Diggs, so I'd see them amenable to a trade revolved around draft capital on a player they may not have a role for. He's elusive with strong hands with the production and profile to succeed though and I want him to get an opportunity.

That ability to break tackles and create yards after catch, in my opinion, hasn't gone away. Even in a reserve role last year working his way back, Metchie put up 158 yards. If Brett Veach wants to find an inexpensive option as Rashee Rice insurance, I love the idea of the former Crimson Tide star.
We've got a long way to go until the season, but Rice's situation leaves everything uncertain. The Chiefs should consider all options and I wouldn't be surprised to see an acquisition made, whether via trade or free agency.
