It’s hard to look at the Kansas City Chiefs draft class and not believe they improved significantly. In Round 1, they traded up for Xavier Worthy, who might not be the star people expect following his 4.21 time in the 40-yard dash, but he’s still going to be deadly with Patrick Mahomes throwing him the ball.
In the second round, they took Kingsley Suamataia out of BYU, and he could be their left tackle of the future. They also landed a few undrafted free agents who might have an outside shot of stealing a roster spot, which means these three veterans might be on the trade block at some point this offseason.
3. Charles Omenihu, DE
In 2022, the Chiefs took George Karlaftis with the 30th overall selection and he’s registered 16.5 sacks in two seasons — 10.5 coming in 2023. They took Felix Anudike-Uzomah at No. 31 the following season and while he had just a half-sack as a rookie, he flashed more than enough athleticism to warrant more time going forward.
Kansas City also has Mike Danna and their top pass rusher remains Chris Jones, a beast in the interior. That’s why they might be willing to part with Charles Omenihu, who recorded 7.0 sacks in 11 games last year.
A former fifth-round pick from Texas, Omenihu has spent time in Houston and San Francisco but had his best run with the Chiefs. Considering the young talent they have around him, it might not be the worst idea to see if any pass-rush-needy teams would be willing to make a move.
2. Kadarius Toney, WR
This one might be hard to pull off since Kadarius Toney has done all he can to make himself an unattractive option for other teams.
He’s lightning-fast fast which is why the New York Giants took a shot on him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He still didn’t have a lot of experience as a receiver during his time at Florida and wore out his welcome during his second year with the Giants.
Kansas City needed help at wideout so they were willing to give up a third and a sixth for Toney in hopes that he can make good on his potential. Through 20 games with the team, he’s been a disappointment with just 41 receptions for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Despite the low numbers and continued drops, Toney insists he’s a top-tier wideout.
As of now, that’s not the case. However, he’s still wildly athletic and had some strong moments during the 2022 Super Bowl run. Two teams have talked themselves into Toney and if he were available, there would surely be more who were willing to gamble on his speed — even if only to find a return man.
The Chiefs have struggled to find receiver help but after drafting Xavier Worthy and signing Marquise Brown to a free-agency deal, they have a vastly improved group this season. That’s why they can afford to shop Toney even with the threat of a suspension looming over Rashee Rice .
1. Skyy Moore, WR
Coming out of Western Michigan in 2022, Skyy Moore was an intriguing prospect despite not being known as an elite route-runner. Moore is still hyper-competitive with an impressive catch radius and the Chiefs were thrilled to bring him in as a second-round pick.
They were hopeful to turn him into a weapon out of the slot but Moore came along slowly as a rookie with just 22 receptions for 250 yards. They expected more in year two after JuJu Smith-Schuster left via free agency but again, Moore wasn’t able to live up to expectations. This time, he had 244 yards and a single touchdown on 21 receptions.
By the end of the year, he was losing time on the field with Mecole Hardman getting the key snaps in the Super Bowl — including the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
Entering his third season, Moore is likely running out of time to make a mark in Kansas City. It doesn’t help him any that Marquise Brown and Xavier Worthy are on the roster now. The potential suspension of Rashee Rice might be the only reason to hang onto Moore but the Chiefs could still look to move on if they don’t see any positive change early in camp.
