The Chiefs defense has been the breakout story of the 2023 campaign, ranking fourth in opponent points per game (13.3) while looking like one of the most dominant units in the NFL.

Second-year standouts Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis are two of the main reasons why the defense looks so good, with both players taking a big leap at critical positions.

If these two maintain this level of play, Kansas City’s defensive prowess will be no fluke, especially with Charles Omenihu returning from suspension in a few weeks.

Knowing Brett Veach’s reluctance to hand out massive contracts, it’s possible the Chiefs won’t sign both McDuffie and Karlaftis to long-term extensions when the time comes. If that’s the case, which player should be prioritized?

Let’s evaluate each player and find out.

McDuffie vs. Karlaftis: Who Has the Higher Ceiling?

Trent McDuffie

McDuffie has been sensational through three weeks, leading the club in tackles (16) AND forced fumbles (2) while displaying the sort of lockdown coverage ability the Chiefs dreamed of when taking him in the first round of the 2022 draft.

When you combine McDuffie’s physicality with his ball skills and physical traits, you get a special player.

That’s spectacular, and it’s fitting to see familiar names on that list like Kendall Fuller, Charvarius Ward, and Steven Nelson.

Veach elected not to keep any of those players long-term, but McDuffie looks like the best of the bunch.

It’s impressive enough that the Chiefs held all No. 1 receivers they’ve faced (Amon-Ra St. Brown, Calvin Ridley, and DJ Moore) under their receiving totals, but McDuffie’s nose for the football and incredible tackling ability has been just as important to Kansas City’s success.

He might be the best tackler on the team right now Nick Bolton notwithstanding, and it looks like he’s improving each week. I don’t know if Veach will sign McDuffie to a huge extension, but I’m certainly hoping he does at this rate.

George Karlaftis

Not to be outdone, Karlaftis already has two sacks in the young season while displaying a new cache of pass-rushing moves and enhanced explosiveness.

Also selected in the first round of last year’s draft, the former Purdue star looks like a foundational piece of the defense for years to come.

That’ll play. It’s particularly exciting to think about what Karlaftis can do with Chris Jones the rest of the season. Jones commands so much attention that it frees Karlaftis and the other pass-rushers up to attack one-on-one matchups.

Once Omenihu comes back, Kansas City could easily once again rank at the top of the league in sacks.

That’s an elite list of names to be on. If Karlaftis continues this emergence, Veach may have no choice but to find a way to keep both second-year players.

The Verdict

What a great problem to have! Two players selected in the same round of the same draft that quickly look like they’re among the very best at their position.

Hats off to Veach and his staff, who have done a tremendous job in the draft these last few years. McDuffie and Karlaftis may represent the crown jewels of Veach’s strong drafting, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the organization keep both players.

If Chris Jones walks and the Chiefs move on from guys like Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Justin Reid, we’ll have a lot more money to work with. That could allow Veach to offer both McDuffie and Karlaftis an extension and that’s how I hope things play out.

Having two young, elite players at premium positions opens up so much for the rest of the roster. It wouldn’t surprise me to see both players make the Pro Bowl, and McDuffie at the least has a good shot at an All-Pro spot at this rate.

With the weak offenses the Chiefs will face over the next five weeks, this is a perfect time for the dynamic duo to continue building their respective resumes.

For now, Chiefs fans can rejoice that Veach seems to have found two foundational defensive stars that I hope will stay together long-term.
