KC Chiefs who deserved to be on Madden 21 cover – Number 1: Patrick Mahomes

There is really no need for me to even make a case here, for just typing his name makes the case all by itself. The only reason Mahomes isn’t on the cover of Madden 21 is because they couldn’t pick the same player twice in two consecutive years.

Jackson is a great quarterback, don’t get me wrong, but Mahomes isn’t human, he is a force of football nature.

Many might scoff at my placing of Mahomes on a pedestal, because he didn’t have the gaudy numbers of his 2018 campaign, but in some ways I found him even more spectacular. Mahomes started his second year as a starter in the NFL against the Jaguars, where he threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, despite an injury to Hill in the first quarter and his own ankle sprain in the second quarter.

For the next several games, Mahomes was clearly hobbled by the sprained ankle, but that didn’t stop him from throwing for 278 yards and four touchdowns in the second quarter alone against divisional rivals the Oakland Raiders, logging the most passing yards in a single quarter since 2008.

  • He would finish the game with 443 yards and was named AFC offensive player of the week and then later AFC offensive player of the month for the second consecutive season for a 4-0 record, 10 passing touchdowns and no picks.

In the week six game against the divisional rival Broncos, it looked as though the Madden curse would claim another victim in young star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, when he went down with a dislocated knee cap and would miss the rest of that game and the upcoming two games against NFC North teams Green bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings.

Despite what appeared to be a fairly gruesome injury upon first sight, Mahomes would make his return a mere two weeks later against the Titans, throwing for 446 yards, three touchdowns and no picks.

He finished his 2019 campaign with 4,031 passing yards and 26 touchdowns to only five interceptions, leading the Chiefs to their second consecutive 12-4 record, a first round by and fourth consecutive AFC West division title, maintaining their strangle hold on the AFC West.

During the divisional round against the Houston Texans, where I have already mentioned the 24-0 hole the Chiefs found themselves in before the cheese on your nachos had cooled, Mahomes would lead the Chiefs on a 51-7 run, including 41 unanswered points.

Mahomes threw 321 yards, five touchdowns, and rushed for an additional 53 yards, carrying the Chiefs to their second consecutive AFC Championship Game. Mahomes would take the Chiefs from a 17-7 hole to a 35-24 victory over the Titans, leading the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years.

In the Super Bowl, down 20-10 to the 49ers, with a little over eight minutes to go in the game, Mahomes led his offense in a 21-0 run and gave the Chiefs their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years while afterwards being crowned Super Bowl MVP.

Perhaps his stats did not eclipse those of his first year as an NFL starter, but he improved as a quarterback and a leader if that is even possible. Some might even say he broke the Madden curse itself, recovering from what could have been a season ending injury and coming back to win the Super Bowl, making him the first player to ever be on consecutive Madden title covers would just be another accolade to add to his rapidly growing collection.

Nevertheless, despite the flawless arguments I have made above for one of my KC Chiefs to be on the cover of the newest Madden entry, it shall be Lamar Jackson, and rightly so, as he had a fantastic season. Jackson’s season saw him take home regular season MVP honors and he certainly deserves to be on the cover of Madden 21.

Besides, the Chiefs can’t win everything, can they? Gotta give the rest of the league a chance.
