NUMBER ONE: TOMMY TOWNSEND (PUNTER)

P. 1. 840. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Florida. Tommy Townsend. player

Simply put, Tommy Townsend has to make this list. At this point, with the shocking release of franchise great Dustin Colquitt, Townsend is automatically gifted with a 50 percent shot at making the roster. That wasn’t the case before, as Colquitt was always the shoe-in to be the punter of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The starting punter competition is wide open and will be one of the most exciting roster battles of training camp (at least as exciting as watching punters can get). Townsend’s competition just happens to be another (second year) UDFA, Tyler Newsome.

Newsome spent the 2019 season on the Chargers’ practice squad, so he’s spent time in the NFL. Townsend, on the other hand, is entering the league as a fresh faced rookie and is probably the favorite heading into camp.

Recap

Obviously it is unlikely that all four of these players make the active roster, but there is a really good chance that we see at least a couple UDFAs make the active roster this season and these are definitely the lead candidates at the moment. Oddly enough, they all come from the SEC.

Keep a close eye on these guys in training camp this year because they could be on the active roster by seasons start.

The UDFA wide receivers would be another position group to keep your eye on this offseason. I would be very surprised to see one make this years roster, but following this season the wide receiver corp will likely look majorly different going into next season.

Any UDFA receivers who make the practice squad this season will be guys who could make the active roster next season
