Kansas City Chiefs: Getting to know Houston Texans before Week 6
By Cullen Jekel
Question 6: Houston’s defense has given up at least 30 points in two games while in the other three games held opponents to 20 or fewer points. What do you see this unit doing against the Chiefs?
Forsha: The only way the Texans win this game is to make Patrick Mahomes uncomfortable, but even on a “bad day” for Mahomes he’s still dangerous to defend.
The secondary of the Texans is worrisome against KC wide receiver Byron Pringle, but the Chiefs as of Wednesday saw Sammy Watkins not practice, and Tyreek Hill being limited. On defense if the Texans can put some pressure on Mahomes, while containing the receivers, making the game come down to the front seven of Houston vs. KC’s rushing attack will determine the winner.
Patterson: Patrick Mahomes is so quick on the draw, I’m just not sure if the defense is going be able to react quickly as his best bet to beat the Texans is in the air. They’re getting better at defending the run as the weeks go by and LeSean McCoy/Damien Williams rush attack is nowhere near as lethal as when they had Kareem Hunt.
The Texans are 12th in yards allowed per game (95.0) and holding [Atlanta] to just 57 yards is a step in the right direction. The secondary is the biggest of my worries as you don’t know what you’re going to get with 35-year-old Johnathan Joseph week-after-week. Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins seem to be way too tall of an order for him but I’m hoping he can prove me wrong. Bradley Roby has been a solid addition from the Broncos and 2nd-rounder Lonnie Johnson Jr. has been notable in flashes. Justin Reid and Tashaun Gipson have also been solid in their respects but against an attack like the Chiefs, you have to be great and it remains to be seen on what that looks like this Sunday.
Question 7: A bit of a fun question as these two will be linked for their careers: who would you rather have, Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson?
Patterson: No question! I want Deshaun Watson — he’s a gamer, he’s a baller, he’s a shot-caller and he does it with such swag. He seems to be even a better person as well. As long as his line can keep him upright, he will be the greatest quarterback the Houston Texans have ever had with the longest tenure, even though there’s not much to compare to.
I have to admit that I wanted Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 Draft because of his style of play and I didn’t even think Watson would be available to pick — let alone be traded for — at the time. Mahomes was more a reachable guy to get but after the Chiefs snatched him up early, the Texans had to turn to Watson, to which the rest has been history. And I’m damn proud of it!
Forsha: With respect to Mahomes, as he’s maybe the best quarterback in the league, the Texans aren’t picking anyone over Watson as he’s still building his career just like Mahomes. In selecting Watson the reason behind that is the potential of Watson could be off the charts once he gets the proper consistency from his offensive line.
Either way neither the Chiefs or Texans went wrong with who they selected, and both franchises should send the Chicago Bears a Christmas card every year for picking [2017 No. 3 draft pick] Mitchell Trubisky, and skipping on both Mahomes and Watson.
