Based on the reports we are hearing from Ian Rapoport, Tyreek Hill seems to be in for a big contract extension, so realistically he will probably be the one to get extended this offseason and the Chiefs will have to work on extending Chris Jones next season.

Based on this report, Hill will likely receive a deal somewhere between “a massive contract making him the highest paid receiver in the league” and a deal the is amongst the top-tier of receiver contacts. That means he will likely have a cap hit of $20 million plus.

Sammy Watkins has the fourth highest cap hit in the league amongst wide receivers at $19.2 million and Antonio Brown has the highest cap hit at just over $22 million per Over the Cap, so somewhere in that range is what should be expected.

  • Although the reports mentioned the Chiefs possibly making him the highest paid receiver in the league, this might not be truly realistic with the money this team is going to owe to different players down the road (one big one being Patrick Mahomes). A four-year extension with a base salary of around $16 million per year and a signing bonus of $26 million could get the deal done.

In this scenario, the Chiefs could give Hill $10 million of his signing bonus this season, increasing his cap hit for 2019 to about $12 million and the remaining four years would have a cap hit of about $20 million per season, with $16 million in base salary and $4 million in signing bonuses per year.

As of now, this extension would tie him with Odell Beckham Jr for the most total value on a wide receiver contract in the NFL at $90 million. Hill would be more than pleased with this deal and it sounds like the Chiefs are willing to break the bank for him, so a contract around this value is what is to be expected. This deal sounds like a lot now, but the way contracts are currently escalating, by the end of this deal, top wide receivers will likely be making $25 million plus per year.

As for Chris Jones, as important as he is to this team and as much sense as it would make to extend him this year, the Chiefs are obviously leaning towards extending Tyreek Hill and continuing their identity of “offense wins football games” mentality.

As mentioned, it is possible that they are both extended, (you can see how in my Version One of realistic roster predictions), but it isn’t the most realistic scenario, especially if the Chiefs plan to give Hill “a massive deal” as Rapaport reported. As smart as it would be to extend him, the Chris Jones deal will likely be put off until next year.

This may or may not hurt the Chiefs in the long run, but it for sure leaves them with more cap space for this season, which we will explore what they could do with later in this article.
