Kansas City Chiefs: Le’Veon Bell isn’t the answer at running back
By Kole Berrey
On paper, Le’Veon Bell would be the perfect fit for the Kansas City Chiefs offense.
Led by young quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Bell would see the least loaded boxes he has ever faced in his career. Teams already have trouble guarding the Chiefs, with weapons like Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and Travis Kelce demanding attention. You simply cannot load the box on this team and sell out to stop the run.
The Chiefs would score 60 points on anyone who tried to take their running game away. This would allow Bell to use his patient running style to take over games at times. That is just from a pure running standpoint, and Bell is anything but just a pure runner.
In his last season played, Bell caught 85(!) passes for 655 yards and two touchdowns. That is production worthy of a solid second or third receiver in any offense. The fact that he also rushed for 1,291 yards and nine touchdowns is mind boggling.
The Chiefs offense is already nearly unstoppable. Imagine adding a three time All-Pro player who runs routes on par with most receivers. It would feel like Kevin Durant joining the Golden State Warriors. The league would not be ready for that kind of firepower.
From a football standpoint, this move would make perfect sense. The beauty of football at the professional level is that there is so much more that goes into it than X’s and O’s, and sadly those other factors are what will stop the Chiefs from making a signing like this.
