Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffery

After mentioning the importance of finding a running back that can not only run the ball but make points through the air for your team, what better player to start off with than Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffery. One of the top prospects in last year’s draft, McCaffery made most of his money in the passing game during his rookie season with the Panthers.

Leading all NFL backs in targets with 113, McCaffery was a significant part of the Carolina offense in 2017. Even with the change at offensive coordinator, there’s no doubt that McCaffery will continue to be a sought-after weapon for quarterback Cam Newton.

Starting in ten games and playing in all 16 last season, McCaffery still has yet to show he can dominate in the run game which is why I kept him at 15th overall. In fact, he only ran the ball 110 times last season for 435 yards and two touchdowns which was an average of 3.7 yards per carry.

I don’t see McCaffery getting a significant amount of points on the group this season, but if you are in a PPR league, he could make you a substantial amount of points. His targets last season are a number that many starting wide receivers don’t see most seasons. If he continues to be a major part of the receiving game, which he should considering the wide receiver talent in Carolina, McCaffery should be a substantial number two running back.
