Kansas City Royals: Starting rotation candidates for 2018 season
STARTING ROTATION CANDIDATES – JOSH STAUMONT
This one is as unlikely as Eric Skoglund, but I’m still including him because we just don’t know what will go down in spring training. Josh Staumont is one of the more talked about pitching prospects in the Royals farm system and he’ll eventually be someone that the rotation turns to.
Staumont can hit triple digits with his fastball and is definitely going to be a pitcher Royals fans get excited to see debut, whenever that time comes. The 24 year old righty was a second round pick by the Royals in 2015 and has turned heads in the minors.
Staumont had a rough 2017 campaign and could definitely use some polishing in the minors. My guess is that he begins the year in AAA and perhaps gets a call-up midseason if injuries occur. If he pitches well, a September call-up is likely, at the very least.
Josh Staumont probably isn’t going to win a starting job right out of spring training, but crazier things have happened. Don’t count this guy out.
