Cairo Santos – Kicker (Tendered)
The Kansas City Chiefs have retained their Special Teams core group for 2017. The Chiefs utilized the original round tender on restricted free agent kicker Cairo Santos. This move keeps some continuity in one of KC’s most reliable group of players, even if just for one more year.
It is a bit surprising that the Chiefs didn’t work out a long-term deal here. After locking up James Winchester for six years, and having Dustin Colquitt under contract for a couple more, it would make sense to do a deal with Santos. Young and reliable kickers are in short supply in the NFL these days, and Cairo Santos checks both boxes.
Because he was just tendered, another team can still offer a deal to Cairo Santos. However, that could work in the Chiefs favor if they are able to match whatever offers come in. I highly doubt that the Chiefs want to go looking for a new kicker, so hopefully this gets worked out. Having our Special Teams unit locked up for the next few years would be a plus.
