Chiefs Top Raider Week Moments No. 9: Larry Johnson For The Win

November 6, 2005

For a while, Kansas City Chiefs fans didn’t think too kindly on the tenure of Larry Johnson. Once a dominant runner in the NFL, wear and tear limited his effectiveness and he became almost a liability in the Chiefs offense. Fans soon began to refer to him as “2.7” referencing the fact his 2.7 yard per carry average was so close to the number 27 on his jersey.

However, when Johnson was in his prime with the Chiefs, he was an absolute wrecking ball. No moment in his career symbolizes that more than the 1 yard carry, as time expired, that would give the Chiefs a 27-23 win. It was the cap on an excellent game for Larry Johnson.

Larry Johnson has had other big games against the Raiders, but this tops them because of the situation. Winning a game in this fashion is always exciting. Doing it against your arch rival just adds a little bit more flavor to it. In this moment, the hot and cold relationship between Johnson and Dick Vermeil was absolutely on fire.
