Best Third Round Draft Picks in Chiefs History – Number 15: Herman Heard (Chiefs running back from 1984-1989)
With the 61st overall pick in the 1984 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Herman Heard out of Southern Colorado. Heard spent six seasons in the NFL, and all six of those seasons were spent in Kansas City as a member of the Chiefs.
Heard was never the full time starting running back for the Chiefs, but he did run his way into the Chiefs record books. He’s currently placing tenth in all-time rushing for Kansas City with 2,694 rushing yards.
Heard never had an 1,000 yard rushing season while a member of the Chiefs, but he provided consistency for the team. In his six years with the team, he finished with 2,694 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns before being out of the league after the 1989 season.
Something to keep in mind with Heard is that the Chiefs were not a good football team while he was in town. They only made it to the postseason once (1986) and were typically irrelevant for a large part of the decade.
Despite not being a huge name for the Kansas City Chiefs, Herman Heard cracks his way into the top 15 due to being one of the team’s leading rushers to this day.
