The Royals have come a long way in the last few years.

The Kansas City Royals no longer have to worry about a bad brand of defense. They currently have four Gold Glove players on their roster and many believe that Lorenzo Cain deserved the award also.

Those players that don’t have Gold Gloves are still pretty good. Omar Infante was third in baseball in UZR among second basemen last season. Moustakas was in the middle of the pack but he was on the right side of the plus/minus. Even Alex Rios was sixth among qualified right fielders.

The Royals have found a model for success that allows them to compete with the large market teams. They are going to continue to put out a quality defensive product with a bullpen that scares everyone. They’re going to continue making contact and applying pressure on the bases. It works for them, and there is no reason to change it anytime soon.

When the season begins and a player may not be performing at the plate, shift eyes to their defensive metrics. If they are playing a good brand of defense, they’re going to get a chance to stay in the lineup. If you can’t drive in the runs, you better be awfully good at preventing them. That’s what the Royals specialize in.
