Round 7 – Pick 28: Cardale Jones, Quarterback (Ohio State)

Cardale Jones is a relative underdog. If Kansas City fans can appreciate anyone, it’s an underdog.

He made headlines in 2014 after both the starting quarterback and the back-up quarterback went out with injuries for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Because this is what third-string quarterbacks do, he went ahead and came in to quarterback the Buckeyes to a National Championship victory.

He only competed in two evens at the combine but he was among the best in both of them.

Cardale Jones Combine Results

  • 40 Yard Dash: 4.81 seconds
  • Vertical Jump: 36 inches

NFL.com had this to say about the former third-string quarterback:

"The right quarterback coach and passing scheme could promote rapid improvement and high-end production with his ability to strike downfield, but his issues with consistency and accuracy make the “bust” label a very real concern."

The Chiefs have Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray competing for the backup quarterback position right now, but neither of them are far and away the best option.

Cardale Jones may turn into a bust, but if Andy Reid can work with him as a project, what harm can come from a low-risk pick in the seventh-round.
