Round 5 – Pick 23: Kenny Lawler, Wide Receiver (Cal)

The KC Chiefs are only one season removed from being scrutinized for not scoring touchdowns with their receivers. This scrutiny leads them to picking a wide receiver with a nose for the end zone in the fifth-round.

Kenny Lawler has scored 27 touchdowns in his three years playing for Cal. He did so with only 143 receptions. That’s good for a touchdown on 19 percent of his receptions.

Kenny Lawler Combine Results

  • 40 Yard Dash: 4.64 seconds
  • Broad Jump: 111 inches
  • Three Cone Drill: 7.13 seconds
  • 20 Yard Shuttle: 4.20 seconds
  • Vertical Jump: 31 inches
  • 60 Yard Shuttle: 11.28 seconds

Lawler finished at the bottom or near the bottom in a lot of these categories. He was one of the top performers in the 60 Yard Shuttle coming in fifth place.

Here’s what NFL.com has to say about the Cal product:

"Uses tight, sharp footwork getting in and out of his breaks. Has a feel for finding opening against zone. Runs routes with consistent play speed. Able to get to top speed early. Sinks into comeback routes and works aggressively back to the throw. Snatches the ball away from his body with impressive hand strength. Hands and body control to make the “wow” catch up top or down low."

Kenny Lawler may not be a deep threat and he doesn’t have a lot of speed. It’s his ability in the slot and in the red zone that makes him an appealing pick.

Everyone taken in the fifth-round or later is a question mark for the most part anyways. It’s not a stretch to see him become a productive weapon for the Chiefs in certain packages.
