Round Seven: Mike Catapano

Grade: C+

Mike Catapano has a total of two sacks and three tackles in his career. One of those sacks came in his rookie season with the Chiefs.

After 2013, Catapano wouldn’t play for the Chiefs again as his season was cut short by a mysterious illness that landed him on the season ending injured reserve. It’s hard to grade a seventh round pick at an extremely poor level just because not much is expected out them anyways.

There have been players that make contributions out of the seventh round, but they’re few and far between. Some notable seventh round picks include names like: Shannon Sharpe, Donald Driver, and Marques Colsten. While there are occasionally good players, most of them end up like Mike Catapano.

Analysis:

John Dorsey has done well in his time with the Chiefs. Though he drafted poorly in 2013, he still saw the team go to the playoffs in his first season as general manager.

The Chiefs have continued to improve over the past two seasons and that’s a positive trend to see as a Chiefs’ fan. For a long time the Chiefs seemed stuck somewhere between irrelevant and ‘maybe next year’. John Dorsey has brought, at the very least, a consistently stable product to the field for people to enjoy.

He does only have three seasons under his belt so far, but there is now real promise of a better tomorrow. While Dorsey get’s a grade of ‘C-‘ for the 2013 draft, he has proven to be a good general manager overall. The lack of playing time for six of the eight picks just didn’t warrant a higher grade than that even though a Pro Bowl tight end was drafted.

Chiefs’ fans have a lot to look forward to with John Dorsey at the helm. Who knows what will come with free agency or this years draft, but if recent history is any indication the Chiefs should only get better from here.
