Royals rumors season is upon us and with the Kansas City Royals sitting right around .500, they could become potential buyers in the coming weeks. Could former Cubs catcher Miguel Montero be an option for the Royals at DH?

The KC Royals are going to need to have an average to above average designated hitter if they want to have any shot at making a deep run this season. Brandon Moss is not that. Moss has yet to really hit a hot streak and is currently slashing .179/.256/.370 in 162 at bats. To sum up, Brandon Moss has been awful.

When the Chicago Cubs announced that they had designated catcher Miguel Montero for assignment, my ears perked up. Montero isn’t great defensively, but the Royals have the best catcher in the league, so his services wouldn’t be needed behind the dish.

Instead, the Royals could slot Montero in as their new designated hitter. The former Cub was slashing .286/.366/.439 with four home runs in 98 at bats, which already makes him a better candidate than Brandon Moss.

Montero will have to clear waivers for the Cubs to be able to trade him. He’s owed seven million dollars, which is likely why the Royals wouldn’t go after him. They’re already trying to cut their payroll numbers down and with Moss then sitting on the bench after acquiring Montero, that’d be a lot of wasted money for the organization.

Montero, who is 33 years old, was likely let go from the Cubs due to his comments following Tuesday night’s loss to Washington in which he blamed Jake Arrieta for allowing seven guys to swipe bags during the game. First baseman Anthony Rizzo did not appreciate Montero’s mouth, stating that players who point fingers are selfish.

Perhaps the Kansas City Royals clubhouse could do without a troublemaker like Miguel Montero, but looking at his slash line instantly makes him a better candidate as the team’s designated hitter than Brandon Moss. The Royals probably won’t go after anyone though, but my hope is that if they decide not to add someone, then they give Jorge Soler another chance to prove his worth.

Soler is a lousy outfielder, but his numbers in Omaha show that he’s starting to figure it out offensively. That’s great news for a KC Royals team that needs to keep up their hot hitting ways if they want to make a run towards October.

What do you think, Royals fans? Would you want these Royals rumors of Miguel Montero to Kansas City to happen or do you think the team should stick to what they have?
