In one of the most anticipated moves of the 2017 offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a contract extension for head coach Andy Reid.

One of the early story lines of the Kansas City Chiefs 2017 offseason was that both Andy Reid and John Dorsey were in the final years of their respective contracts. At least one of those situations has now been resolved as Andy Reid has signed an extension with the Chiefs.

The terms of the contract are not yet released, and many of the details probably never will be. However, the fact that the Chiefs have extended Reid’s contract is a good sign for the future. With the team having invested in a rookie quarterback that was hand-picked by Andy Reid himself.

This new contract also provides the Chiefs with continuity in their leadership for the foreseeable future. Having your head coach under contract for the long-term gives the team a certain peace of mind. That can be a big factor in the decision of a pending free agent.

More from Kansas City Chiefs

There was never really any doubt that the Kansas City Chiefs were going to sign Andy Reid to an extension. Andy Reid has revived the Chiefs franchise in much the same manor that Marty Schottenheimer once did. Kansas City has put together winning seasons in each year under Reid’s leadership. That includes winning their first playoff game since the Schottenheimer era.

The remarkable thing is that the Chiefs have been winning games despite a departure from what most expect from an Andy Reid team. Reid is best known for the offensive prowess of his teams. However, in Kansas City it has been the defense that has carried the load. In fact, the complaints facing the team are generally based on the offense.

Most importantly though, the Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of an 11-5 season in 2015 and a 12-4 campaign last year. That puts the Chiefs among the top teams in the NFL. You do everything you can to keep a coach who has taken your team to those kinds of results.

With Patrick Mahomes now set to be the Chiefs future, it only makes sense to keep Andy Reid around to guide him. Kansas City has the potential to be a team that gets into the title mix on a yearly basis. Andy Reid has been there before. Hopefully the Chiefs can get him that elusive Lombardi Trophy.
