The 2017 NFL Draft saw the KC Chiefs snag a quarterback in the first round for the first time since 1983. They actually traded up from the 27th pick to the tenth overall pick to grab Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

With such an exciting first round selection, the Kansas City Chiefs have to continue to be aggressive and build this team up. They did a great job in trading up to draft Patrick Mahomes, but they have two picks to make on Day 2 of the draft and should look to select guys who can actually contribute to the team in 2017.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled with the pick of Mahomes at tenth overall, but he won’t be able to play for the Chiefs until 2018 at the earliest. The amount that the Chiefs gave up to trade up is just what the going rate is for good teams to land quarterbacks these days. No way would Kansas City have gotten their man at 27th overall.

Some of the positions that the Chiefs need to consider drafting on Day 2 are cornerback, linebacker, and running back, all of which still have plenty of great available options left on the board. They got the biggest position, quarterback, out of the way in the first round, and now it’s time to look at the other needs.

The cornerback and running back classes are both incredibly deep, so the Chiefs could get some solid players still on Day 2. Should they opt to go with a cornerback, Chidobe Awuzie out of Colorado or Teez Tabor out of Florida would all be excellent additions to the Kansas City Chiefs secondary.

The running back position saw two guys go in the top ten in Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffrey, so plenty of talented guys are still waiting to hear their names called. Dalvin Cook is still available as is Alvin Kamara and Kareem Hunt. With running backs not being as highly touted as they once were, the Chiefs could wait until the third round to get one and still be well off at the position.

With all of the teams drafting up to get quarterbacks, a lot of great defensive players fell in the draft. The Chiefs still have to make some defensive picks and they’ve done well in the second and third rounds over the years.

Caleb Brantley, Tim Williams, Zach Cunningham, and Jordan Willis are some big name defenders who are still waiting for a team to pick them. I’d really like the Chiefs going after Cunningham because he could be the replacement for Derrick Johnson in a year or two.

All in all, it’s hard to be upset with the KC Chiefs after Day One of the draft. They did something we haven’t seen them do in a looooong time and that’s be aggressive and make a splash in the first round. They got Patrick Mahomes and now need to continue to build this team into a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
