The Kansas City Royals have not been playing good baseball so far this season. It’s almost ironic in a way that the organization chose the “Raised Royal” theme, as this past week has reminded all of us of our days of growing up with the Royals.

This past offseason it was announced that the KC Royals‘ 2017 slogan would be “Raised Royal”. The slogan is all about celebrating those of us who grew up rooting for the Royals as children or as young adults.

I grew up in the 1990s and the Royals were a joke then. They were never winners and I hadn’t seen them in the playoffs until the 2014 season. The 2014 and 2015 seasons were some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life. I loved watching those crazy comebacks by the Royals in those two big playoff runs and when the Royals won it all in 2015, I was overcome with joy.

The rest of Kansas City was thrilled too, showing up in huge numbers to the World Series parade and the rally just days after the big win in New York against the Mets. It was an amazing time to be a Kansas City Royals fan, but now… The Royals have reminded us of those tougher times with this team.

More from KC Kingdom

In only 19 games this season, the Royals have scored more than five runs only three times. Their offense is atrocious, their bullpen is a shell of its former self, and the starting pitching hasn’t even been rewarded for their dominant outings on the mound. It’s just like the old times, right?

While it’s really not funny that the Kansas City Royals are struggling this much, the fact that their slogan is a reference to growing up with the team hits close to home with a lot of the fan base. For anyone who’s around my age, the Royals being bad has become second nature to us. These past few seasons were great, but it wasn’t like we thought those Royals were going to stay forever.

Now, even with the likes of Alex Gordon, Eric Hosmer, and Mike Moustakas still on the team, the Royals are awful. It’s only 19 games into the 2017 season, but man… It’s hard not to think back to those days just five years ago when this team was dreadful.

I’m not saying that it’s time for fans to jump ship (though I’m sure many were off the ship days ago), but these past few games have been really tough to watch. If the KC Royals don’t start playing better, we’ll see another “Raised Royal” tradition, which will consist of guys like Hosmer, Moose, and Lorenzo Cain being shipped off to other teams for prospects.

While it’s not fun watching the Royals struggle, the Raised Royal slogan really fits well with how poorly this team has been performing.
