We know that the Kansas City Chiefs are in the market for a running back. The Citadel’s Tyler Renew could be a find as an undrafted free agent.

It has been no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs would be looking for a running back in the 2017 NFL Draft. In fact, the team could be looking for a couple of backs. The running game is important to the Chiefs offense. Tyler Renew of The Citadel may be able to bring something to the table as an undrafted free agent.

While most of the focus for fans and analysts has been on who would replace Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs are actually losing two running backs. Knile Davis has gone largely forgotten in all of this, but he shouldn’t. Davis may not have been very effective this past season, but it is another roster opening.

One thing I notice when I look at Kansas City’s roster is that they do not have a true power back. That is someone who excels at picking up short yardage. Spencer Ware is the closest thing, but he does not fit the mold of a guy who comes in and picks up one or two yards when you need it.

The Chiefs need to make sure they aren’t getting caught up in the thought of just replacing Jamaal Charles. Teams use running backs for a variety of reasons and Kansas City is actually short in a couple of areas. John Dorsey needs to take advantage of a very talented draft class.

Hey, it’s not often I get a chance to break down someone from my alma mater. However, Tyler Renew is a guy worth looking at. Renew added 14 pounds to his playing weight as he shifts to more of a fullback for the draft. However, he still put up some very good numbers at his Pro Day, even with the added weight.

Tyler Renew is a powerful runner who attacks between the tackles. Surprising burst when he gets into the open field. Shows the ability to lower his shoulder and knock over smaller defenders. Praised for his character and work ethic (trained for Pro Day on his own). Reliable hands out of the backfield.

The negatives on Tyler Renew are that he’s not a top tier athlete. Doesn’t have blazing speed or top shelf quickness. Very little experience in pass blocking. Comes from a smaller school, so unknown what he can do against better competition.

The Chiefs have shown some interest in fullbacks and power backs in this draft class. If that’s what they are looking for then Tyler Renew could be a great find for them as an undrafted free agent.

We know the Kansas City Chiefs will be looking for at least one running back in the 2017 NFL Draft. Grabbing a second guy to be a power back, or even an heir to Anthony Sherman, could also be a very solid investment. A lot of good backs end up not being drafted. The Chiefs could absolutely capitalize on that.
