The KC Chiefs signed tight end Gavin Escobar on Friday evening, providing depth at the tight end position. Does bringing Escobar in mean the Demetrius Harris Experiment has come to an end?

The Kansas City Chiefs have been fairly quiet during free agency this offseason, which is fine. When they’ve made moves, however, it’s usually answered a big question lingering out there in NFL Land.

Does this particular signing of former Cowboys tight end Gavin Escobar mean that Demetrius Harris could be on his way out the door?

Harris has never been a particularly popular player in Kansas City. Sure, he’s had some nice catches here and there, but the former college basketball player never transformed into much for the Chiefs.

Brought in to be a legit number two tight end to Travis Kelce, Harris has disappointed on several platforms. He drops the football way too much and recently was arrested for marijuana possession. Could that have been the final straw for the Chiefs’ patience with Demetrius Harris?

On Friday, the KC Chiefs inked Gavin Escobar to a contract and the former second round pick by the Cowboys was a bust in Dallas. He’s nothing special, but Matt Connor of Arrowhead Addict asked Steven Mullenax of The Landry Hat (the Cowboys FanSided site) to give some insight on Escobar’s skills.

"Escobar has always been an excellent receiver and his frame (6-6, 260) makes him a nice red zone threat. His issues in Dallas have more to do with his inability to block consistently and a severe lack of playing time due to already having Jason Witten on the team."

Blocking issues is the big red flag there, but obviously John Dorsey saw potential in Gavin Escobar or he wouldn’t be bringing him on board. He’s had 30 receptions for 333 yards and eight touchdowns in four NFL seasons.

Harris, on the other hand, has had 27 receptions for 217 yards and two touchdowns since 2014. He’s had some awesome catches over the past three seasons (mainly this past year when he caught the two-point conversion against Denver and Dontari Poe‘s jump ball touchdown pass, also against Denver).

Harris wasn’t a football player in college, which is likely why he’s never flourished in the NFL. Andy Reid seems to like those type of guys, also giving Ross Travis a shot to prove himself this past season.

The other tight end on the roster, James O’Shaughnessy, has done nothing.

In other words, Gavin Escobar could end up being a great signing. He could be the number two tight on the roster and could finally be what pushes the Chiefs to shut the book on the Demetrius Harris chapter.

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Is Gavin Escobar the new number two tight end for the Chiefs or will Demetrius Harris be given another shot?
