The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed defensive tackle Javis Jenkins to a one-year deal. The big defensive lineman served as a backup for the Chiefs in 2016.

It has been a quiet Free Agency period for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017. Chiefs GM John Dorsey has been focused more on keeping players in house rather than pursuing those on the market. That trend continued today as KC has re-signed defensive tackle Jarvis Jenkins. Jenkins was a late addition in 2016 who helped provide depth to an injury-shortened defensive line.

This move comes not long after the Chiefs signed former Eagles defensive tackle Bennie Logan to a one-year deal. These moves should help Kansas City overcome the loss of Dontari Poe who has signed with the Atlanta Falcons. At the very least, the Chiefs now have a starter and backup at defensive tackle for the 2017 season.

This is unlikely to be the final move the Chiefs make at defensive tackle this offeason. Signing Jarvis Jenkins and Bennie Logan to one-year deals doesn’t help KC beyond 2017. That means it is still very likely that KC will look to the NFL Draft in order to find a long-term answer at the position.

A one-year deal for Jarvis Jenkins isn’t big news, but it is news. The contract details are still pending, but I would not expect he was signed to much more than the veteran minimum. In fact, there is no guarantee that Jenkins will even make the team this year. Deals like this happen all the time just to encourage Training Camp competition.

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting close to filling out their 90-man roster for Training Camp. The NFLPA put the Chiefs at 72 players this morning. Adding Jarvis Jenkins puts them at 73, leaving just 17 spots remaining. With 10 picks in the draft this year, we can see just how few spots there really are left on this roster.
