Kansas City Chiefs: Jimmy Garoppolo No Longer An Option

The Kansas City Chiefs may have lost an opportunity to acquire a challenger for the quarterback position. It was announced earlier today the Patriots are planning to keep backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Back when discussions about the Kansas City Chiefs‘ starting quarterback was floating around, Jimmy Garoppolo was considered an option as a potential starter. Our own Leigh Oleszczak even gave her opinion on it.

With the recent news today, it seems those questions have been answered. Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots do not intend to trade Jimmy Garoppolo. Honestly, would Garoppolo have been an option that the Chiefs would have pursued?

I would hope that John Dorsey and Andy Reid have some knowledge of the history of picking up backup quarterbacks, especially from the Patriots. A previous example of this would be Matt Cassel.

Backup quarterbacks are never a sure thing. They are backups for a reason, they can handle their own when their number is called, but they usually have trouble managing a starting position on the team.

There has been previous success with backup quarterbacks as well. Tom Brady is an example of that, and so is Dak Prescott. Time will tell whether Garoppolo can be a future starter for a team, considering that he is now the eventual replacement for Tom Brady, who is now 40.

With six games played last season, Jimmy Garoppolo did put up some decent numbers. He threw for four touchdowns, no interceptions, and completed 502 yards worth of passing, along with a completion percentage of 68.3.

These numbers may look appealing to Chiefs’ fans, but having a workload of an entire season takes a toll on players that are just thrown into the mix. Eventually we will know how Garoppolo handles a entire season since Bill Belichick has decided to hold on to the breakout backup quarterback star.
