Believe it or not, it’s been four years since the KC Chiefs struck a deal with the San Francisco 49ers that brought quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City. He’s still the quarterback of the team in a deal that was huge at the time.

Four years flew by, didn’t it? It seems just like yesterday that I was hopping on Twitter and seeing several tweets stating that the Kansas City Chiefs and Alex Smith would be together for the 2013 season.

At the time, Chiefs fans were excited to have an experienced veteran quarterback come to Kansas City and lead this team. The 2012 season had been rough, but with six guys making the Pro Bowl that year, it showed that this team just needed a quarterback experienced enough to come in and take the reigns.

I was pumped about this trade and four years later, have no regrets about it. Smith did what he was supposed to do with this team, which was come in as a seasoned veteran and be a consistent quarterback for the Chiefs to lean on.

Since Smith and Andy Reid have come to Kansas City, the Chiefs have had a winning record every year and have only missed the playoffs once. I get that fans are upset about losing early in the playoffs every year, but not all of that is on Smith’s shoulders.

Smith’s record as a starter in Kansas City is 41-20 and he’s played in all but three games during that time (though one of those he was intentionally put on the bench to preserve him for the postseason). He’s been a winner for this organization and is easily one of the best quarterbacks the Chiefs have ever seen.

Smith’s passing yard numbers have gone up each year, but with his Chiefs career low of 15 touchdowns in 2016, the former number one overall pick could be heading into his final season as a member of the KC Chiefs.

There’s been a lot of speculation and rumors about Tony Romo potentially coming to KC (I’m still not buying it) and if that’s the case, Smith would likely be traded to another team.

While a lot of fans are hard on Smith, I do think they’d miss him down the line. He’s not great, but he’s been a good enough starter to get you to the dance. Remember all of those seasons when the Chiefs weren’t good enough to win more than six games? I do all too well and never want to go back to that feeling.
