Kansas City Chiefs: The Future For Jamaal Charles
By Ben Almquist
Kansas City Chiefs star running back Jamaal Charles has gone back for another knee procedure with Dr James Andrews. The status of his future in football is now in question.
For years, Jamaal Charles was the lone bright spot of the Kansas City Chiefs offense. His ability to create big plays despite opposing defenses being prepared for him kept Chiefs fans going. Unfortunately, Charles has had yet another knee surgery this year. Now his future with the Chiefs, and the NFL in general, is very much in question.
Knee injuries are a major concern for NFL running backs. We have seen time and time again how a back can struggle to come back from these issues. That was part of why Jamaal Charles earned so much respect when he came back from his knee surgery in 2012. Charles would spend the next three seasons as one of the most dominant running backs in the NFL.
That is why there was some optimism surrounding his return this season. Jamaal Charles missed most of the 2015 season to a knee injury, but there was hope that he would be back on the field early this year. Unfortunately, that came to a halt pretty quickly when Charles had to go back to see Dr. James Andrews about swelling in his knee. With yet another surgery in the books, the situation looks even bleaker.
That isn’t to say that things are hopeless. The return timeline for Charles actually hasn’t changed much. He could still be available to the Chiefs at the end of the regular season. So there is still some room for hope…just not very much.
