The Kansas City Chiefs are starting Nick Foles at quarterback this weekend against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Alex Smith will be inactive after taking two hard hits last weekend.

Alex Smith will sit this weekend’s game against Jacksonville out and Nick Foles will be starting in his first game in over a year. The news wasn’t super shocking considering how hard of hits Alex Smith took last weekend against the Colts.

Chiefs Kingdom will get to see Foles in his first start for Kansas City and it’ll come against the 2-5 Jaguars. Having Foles start in place of Smith won’t be too much of a step back at all, but Smith will still be the guy when he’s recovered and ready to play.

Foles did well in Smith’s absence last week, throwing for over 200 yards and two touchdowns. He looked a bit shaky at first, but settled in quickly after.

If Smith is going to miss any starts this year, this would be the best week for him to sit. While it’s not okay to be overly confident, I think most fans would agree with me when I say that the Jaguars are a bad football team. The Chiefs are the better team and should win.

Foles performed well against a miserable Colts defense last week and should be able to put up similar numbers in four quarters of work against a not very good Jacksonville defense.

Should Foles get injured in this game (knock on wood), then Smith will not enter the game for Kansas City. He’ll be inactive for this game and Tyler Bray will be the backup. Hopefully that won’t become an issue.

This is exactly why the Kansas City Chiefs went out and signed Nick Foles this offseason. Foles is an experienced veteran quarterback and he’s played under Andy Reid before. He’ll put the Chiefs in a good position to win and they shouldn’t lose any momentum with their starter on the sidelines for a week.

Now to the juicy stuff.

Any time a starting quarterback misses time, there’s always talk about controversy at the position. What if Foles goes out there and dominates the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday? Will the Chiefs then decide to stick with him and move on from Smith?

The answer is no. No, they won’t.

Smith has been this team’s starter since 2013 and that won’t change. Foles has seen action against a lowly Colts defense and will now face the Jaguars, who are 2-5 and not very good.

So, please, don’t start the “Foles is going to be our starter long term” conversations because they’re not true. Smith is the guy moving forward
