Kansas City Chiefs: Another Failed Draft Pick for John Dorsey

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Chiefs traded Knile Davis to the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday, and it signifies yet another failed draft pick made by John Dorsey.

John Dorsey joined the Kansas City Chiefs as the general manager during the 2013 offseason. It was an offseason that saw the Chiefs coming off a franchise worst season, in which they only won two games and the moral was completely out the window.

In Dorsey’s first draft with the team, the Chiefs had the number one overall pick in the draft. The KC Chiefs made Eric Fisher the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, and that pick was actually smart considering how poorly that draft has turned out.

Just a few rounds later, Dorsey selected tight end Travis Kelce and running back Knile Davis. Kelce missed his entire rookie year after being placed on injured reserve, but Davis made an impact pretty quickly into his career.

Great teams build themselves through the draft and the Kansas City Chiefs have failed at doing that in the past few years.

Davis started in two games his rookie year, one of those being in the postseason in which he made a huge impact in the game. In fact, Davis looked pretty good in relief of Jamaal Charles during his first two seasons, but the honeymoon ended once the 2015 season began.

Despite Charles going down in 2015 after only five weeks of the regular season, Davis struggled to see playing time. Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware rose to the top of the depth chart for the Chiefs, and the writing appeared to be on the wall for one Knile Davis after that.

With the Kansas City Chiefs parting ways with Davis, that now makes ten drafted players that Dorsey has let go from the team. Now, of course, most of those guys were late rounders, but there has been a history of letting go “early round” guys as well.

Recent in all of our minds was when the Chiefs shockingly waived KeiVarae Russell, a third round pick by the team during this year’s draft. Russell was then scooped up by the Bengals on the waiver wire.

While it was obvious that the organization needed to move on from Knile Davis, it’s just yet another draft pick under John Dorsey that has failed. Davis should be able to get some more eye pleasing stats with the Packers, but it’s a shame that he couldn’t be utilized more in Kansas City.

The team did, however, get a late conditional draft pick for Davis, so perhaps that means Dorsey has some tricks up his sleeve for the draft in 2017. Maybe, just maybe, they’ll draft a quarterback in the first round! Wouldn’t that be ever so exciting?

It was the right move to trade Knile Davis, but I’m still scratching my head at just how many failed picks John Dorsey has generated in just a few years with the team. Great teams build themselves through the draft and the Kansas City Chiefs have failed at doing that in the past few years.
