The KC Royals and their fans are watching the MLB playoffs from home this year, but there’s one team that fans should be rooting for – the Chicago Cubs.

Kansas City is Forever Royal, that much is true. With the Kansas City Royals not in the postseason this year, however, fans need a team to cheer for during October baseball. I invite all Royals fans to join me in rooting on the Chicago Cubs this year.

First of all, the Cubs haven’t won a World Series title in over 100 years. This is believed to be in part due to the “Curse of the Billy Goat”, which became a thing in 1945 (the last time the Cubs made it to a World Series). A tavern owner was asked to leave Wrigley Field due to his goat bothering people and he then put a curse on the franchise.

Whether you believe in sports curses or not is one thing, but one thing remains true: the Cubs have been the team to endure the longest championship drought, and this year will hopefully change that for them.

The curse has seemingly returned in the past, with a black cat entering the on deck circle during the team’s 1969 season. Of course, we all likely remember the Steve Bartman incident in 2003 as well.

All of these things could just be coincidences, but regardless, Chicago Cubs fans have endured a lot of heartbreak in their lifetime. It’s time that they get some glory, right?

Kansas City Royals fans might not have had to go through nearly as long of a drought (though three decades without a title wasn’t much fun), but they knew what it was like to be lovable losers for a very long time.

It might not be as much fun watching the playoffs without our Kansas City Royals, but you can make it a little more fun by rooting for a fun team like the Chicago Cubs.

From 1986-2013, the KC Royals never made it into the postseason. There was a three-year stretch in which the Royals lost 100 games each year. It wasn’t easy being a fan of the Royals during those times.

Cubs fans, however, have been known as the lovable losers. They go to Wrigley Field and support their Cubbies even in the darkest of times.

I went to a game at Wrigley in 2012. The Cubs were in the midst of a ten-game losing streak and fans were still excited to watch their Cubbies in action. It was incredible to me that a team so bad had such loyal fans.

Look, I get it. Baseball isn’t as much fun when your favorite team isn’t in the running to win it all. The Chicago Cubs aren’t like the rest of the teams in baseball though. They haven’t won the World Series since 1908. They’ve also had to sit back and watch their most hated rival, the St. Louis Cardinals, win 11 titles.

I can’t even imagine that type of pain. Oh wait, yes I can, I’m a Chiefs fan.

The Cubs deserve something great, and that’s why Royals fans should jump on board the Cubbie bandwagon and cheer them on all the way to a World Series title.

It’s not like the Cubs are unlikable either – With All-Star players like Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and oh yeah… former Royal Ben Zobrist, it’s hard to root against them.

The Cubs also have great pitching with Jon Lester leading the way. Kyle Hendricks and Jake Arrieta are a lot of fun too, and have proven themselves this season.

But hey – If you want to root for Madison Bumgarner, who singlehandedly stole a World Series from our beloved KC Royals in 2014, then go ahead. Or if you want to root for Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, and other annoying rivals to the Royals on the Blue Jays team, then be my guest.

Just know that the Cubs and the Royals aren’t so different. When I went to Wrigley Field last year to watch the Royals square off against the Cubs, their fans were great.

They make it easy to root for an opposing team, and despite my Royals losing that day, no one made me feel badly about it. They also didn’t care one bit that I wore my Alex Gordon jersey in their stadium.

It might not be as much fun watching the playoffs without our Kansas City Royals, but you can make it a little more fun by rooting for a fun team like the Chicago Cubs. This doesn’t make me any less of a Royals fan, it just makes me more of a baseball fan.

If the Royals can’t win it, I want the Chicago Cubs to. They’ve waited long enough.

Go Cubs Go!
